BUYER – Local 28 – Term for a period of up to 13 months

Located at 3099 Barrington Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Irving Shipbuilding has a proud history as Canada’s shipbuilder. A proud member of the J.D. Irving, Limited family of companies, we have been building quality vessels and fabricated modules for more than 50 years, and our Halifax Shipyard has been at the forefront of Canadian shipbuilding for 130 years.

Since 2012, we have invested more than $400 million in facilities, people, processes, and technology, making Halifax Shipyard one of the most modern and capable shipyards in the world. Over the next 30 years our shipbuilders will construct 23 modern patrol ships and surface combatants for the Royal Canadian Navy as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, the largest defence procurement in Canadian history.

This year, we will deliver the lead Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, the largest Navy ship built in Canada in 50 years. And we’re just getting started. We’re growing our team with career-defining opportunities that will revitalize Canada’s shipbuilding industry and provide Canada’s sailors with the ships they need to protect Canada’s interests at home and abroad. Our workforce of over 2,000 will grow to more than 2,800 at peak construction of the Canadian Surface Combatants.

We have built more than 80% of Canada’s current combatant fleet and continue to perform maintenance and modernization work on the ships, including the Halifax-class frigates.

We are currently seeking two (2) Buyers – Local 28 in temporary roles for a period of up to 13 months, located in Halifax, N.S.

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities and qualifications:



  • Responsible for the purchase of material, equipment, and services for new ship construction, ship repair, commercial work, and other plant requirements, as directed.

  • Issues blanket orders for a variety of material and services required on a continuous basis.

  • Proficient understanding of RFx process for sourcing materials and services. Able to execute RFx for end-to-end process using e-procurement system tools for materials and service

  • Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties and assignments related to the Purchasing Department, as required.

  • Other purchasing and administrative functions as directed by supervisor

  • Understands influence of market trends on supplier pricing

  • Understands procurement main KPIs and factors that influence

  • Develop product and service knowledge and their function within their area of responsibility

  • Education Required: Completion of post-secondary education, or equivalent work experience
  • Years of Experience Required
    • Minimum 2-5-years’ experience working in purchasing. Marine experience would be considered an asset
  • Some supply chain education, would be considered an asset
  • Experience working with purchase orders, inventory databases and knowledge of expediting and logistics.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office is a requirement and JD Edwards and AVEVA would be considered an asset
  • Must be process oriented with a high attention to detail
  • Must be diverse in the ability to purchase material, major equipment, and sub-contracted services for new ship construction, ship repair, commercial work, and other plant requirements
  • Actively participates in team; and understands the need for teamwork
  • Build relationships internally and externally with SC stakeholders
  • Seek to enhance support to peer departments, customers and vendors
  • Contributes to supplier performance reviews
  • Contributes to cost planning initiative
All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
