Irving Shipbuilding, located at 3099 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 5M7, is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels. The company's primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with three other locations in the Maritime Provinces. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Coast Guard. The Maintenance Planner is a member of the Facilities and Maintenance Team and is responsible for the planning of maintenance activities for all facilities, systems, plant and equipment at Halifax Shipyard.

The Maintenance Planner is a staff position based at Halifax Shipyard and reports to the Lead Maintenance Planner. This position participates and supports the vision, initiatives and plans of the Facilities and Maintenance Team at Halifax Shipyard.


  • Complete planning activities for all preventative and corrective maintenance tasks at Halifax Shipyard.

  • Develop scope of work for service contracts required to support maintenance activities at site.

  • Support safety initiatives and ensure compliance to site safety policies and procedures.

  • Complete site inspections of Halifax Shipyard

  • Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to perform planning functions.

  • Participate in department daily management meetings.

  • Participate in reviewing, prioritizing and approving site maintenance activities.

  • Ensure Maintenance best practices are supported and followed.

  • Undertake improvement initiatives to support maintenance performance Halifax Shipyard.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education; Bachelor of Engineering – Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial (0-3 yrs. experience), C.Tech – Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Trades Diploma (Mechanical or Electrical) with appropriate experience
  • Demonstrated planning experience in an Industrial Environment;
  • Experience with Project Management Principles would be considered an asset;
  • Planning experience in the Shipbuilding Industry (infrastructure) would be considered an asset;
  • Strong computer skills including the MS Office Suite;
  • JD Edwards CMMS experience would be considered an asset;
  • Strong communication skills.
All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
