Irving Shipbuilding, located at 3099 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 5M7, is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels. Irving Shipbuilding is currently recruiting for an MDV Permit Coordinator - Test and Trials. This position is a permanent full time position located in Halifax, NS.


  • Bachelor’s Degree engineering (P Eng or equivalent) or relevant technical diploma at the technologist level in Electrical Engineering 
  • 3-5 years experience in a permit coordinator role, in a shipbuilding environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel)
  • Experience commissioning ships power distribution (i.e. switchgear, power management system)
  • Marine engineering experience, including harbour trials/sea trials
  • Experience/knowledge of the operation of medium voltage electric drive propulsion systems is an asset
  • Extensive experience of operating a LOTO system in a fast paced industrial environment
  • Strong organizational skills in document management
  • Extensive experience working in a process driven environment
  • Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).


Key Responsibilities:

  • Authorized person to operate MV equipment in accordance with company MV safety procedures.
  • Fulfill the duties of the MV permit office which include but are not limited to, issuing of permit to work documents, writing and implementation of switching schedules, proving dead, application of a circuit main earth and operation of a key based interlock system.
  • Take on the responsibilities of the Senior Authorized person in their absence. 
  • Keep accurate records of all issued permits and maintain status boards.
  • Support commissioning activities for all MV equipment including switchgear, transformers and propulsion motors.
  • Safe operation of a medium voltage load bank. 
  • Liaise with vendors to ensure all pre requisites are in place to support the commissioning plan.
  • Work as part of the Test & Trials team to commission systems, equipment and demonstrate compliance with Classification Society and Customer requirements.
  • Willingness to work long/flexible hours.
