Irving Shipbuilding, located at 3099 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 5M7, is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels. The company's primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with three other locations in the Maritime Provinces. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Coast Guard. This position will play a critical, strategic role for the Production team. It provides thought leadership and direction to the organization regarding training and development with special emphasis on our production workforce and yard-wide process efficiency and execution.


Reporting to the first line supervisor in the production department, the Production Work Leader will have the responsibility to lead and assist their workforce in developing specific skill sets and knowledge to enhance their growth and improve team results.  Duties may also include supervising a team of employees at the Shipyard.


These are multiple permanent full-time staff roles based in Halifax, NS.



  • Education Required: Trade Certification or Associate’s Degree
  • Years of Experience Required: 2-5 years of experience working in the trades
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in shipyard work operations and trades/shop practices
  • Overall knowledge of all phases of shipbuilding and repair
  • Experience in training, supervising and/or coaching
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoy working in a fast paced, team environment
  • Customer focused, enthusiastic, and motivated

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

  • Coordinate tasks and assist trades employees
  • Apprentice on the job learning documentation
  • Monitor work unit progress and evaluate results
  • Perform completion of work reviews/job pack certification
  • Perform work site reviews
  • Administer leave, handle administering discipline
  • Verbalize expectations to employees
  • Communicate with employees and supervisors
  • Job briefing, history, DPS
  • Perform shop and ship surveillance
  • Use shop policies
  • Temporary service requirements
  • Work preparation expectations
  • Confined space requirements
