ACADEMIC COORDINATOR

 

The Moncton Wildcats is currently seeking an Academic Coordinator to join the Moncton Wildcats dynamic QMJHL ice hockey team. The Moncton Wildcats are a junior ice hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. They play out of the brand new world class Moncton Events Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

 

Moncton Wildcats Hockey Limited facilitates the academic progress of its players and is responsible for providing education to its players with the support of the Academic Coordinator. The Academic Coordinator must work closely with the Director of Hockey Operations, the coach and any other person among the team that is in charge of the education component in order to make sure that the players pursue their studies, in accordance with the QMJHL Education policy. includes support includes supporting the players to recognize and achieve their educational goals by assisting the players to examine school programs, to recognize their academic strengths and to select a major. The Academic Coordinator also works closely with professors and other administrators and stays up-to-date on academic program changes. Hours of work are typically 20 - 25 hours (half days, Monday to Friday) during the academic school year.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a consultant to the team management for all matters concerning the players’ education, and mainly for the allocation of necessary resources in time, staff and money in order to carry out that mandate 
  • Have the knowledge of the academic environment required to adequately advise the player in his studies 
  • Work with the player, his parents and his billet family in order to maintain the player’s motivation for satisfactory school progress 
  • Act as an advisor to the player who is invited to a professional camp in order to minimize any inconvenience that could affect his progress in school 
  • Propose solutions to improve the education program of the team and that of the League 
  • Ensure that agreements with appropriate local organizations are well established, maintained and managed 
  • Collaborate with the school educational establishments, get involved in the process of the player’s registration
  • Collaborate with the academic coordinators of the other teams as well as with the QMJHL partners 
  • Monitor regularly the progress of each player and keep the parents informed 
  • Keep a complete and up to date school file for each player and make it available to the QMJHL 
  • Ensure that all needs for catching up or updating after unavoidab le absences from school are met 
  • Confirm the players who are taking distance learning courses are well supervised, with a regular follow-up 
  • See to the needs and monitoring of players presenting specific cases; 
  • Fill out and submit on time all reports and forms requested through the software used by the QMJHL 
  • If a player is traded, make sure to communicate all the necessary information regarding his school file to the academic advisors of other teams

Successful Candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree program in education or a related field ; Master’s degree an asset
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience (experience in student counseling, development, education, or related field)
  • Fluently bilingual (verbal and written) in both English and French
  • Desire to help players in their academic journey, from enrollment to graduation
  • Excellent communications and influencing skills
  • Professional expertise with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated concern and caring attitude toward players and their families
  • Knowledgeable of institutional regulations, policies, offerings, and procedures
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Strong sense of urgency to complete tasks
  • Ability to maintain accurate and updated records concerning student performance
