Seed Orchard Technician
 
J.D. Irving, Limited is currently seeking candidates for a Seed Orchard Technician position at the Parkindale Seed Orchard located in Elgin, NB. 

Established in 1983, the Parkindale Seed Orchard is the foundation for J.D. Irving, Limited’s reforestation program. Ensuring a healthy forest for future generations begins at the seed orchard where we use superior trees, selected through our multi-generational tree improvement program, to produce a variety of species. Using sustainable orchard management, we produce abundant, high quality seed crops each year, while maintaining healthy orchard trees. Reforestation occurs after this seed is used to grow top-quality seedlings in our nurseries which is a critical part of our commitment to sustainable forestry.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating and participating in annual tree breeding, cone picking from mature spruce trees and seed extraction operations.
  • Acting as a Lead Hand for a team of labourers, including work planning and coordination.
  • Providing training and guidance to team members.
  • Data collection and record keeping.
  • Monitoring and management for orchard pests such as insects and varmint.
  • Operating tractors and other machinery and equipment including string trimmers.
  • Performing manual duties to maintain landscaped environments including but not limited to mowing lawns, weed trimming, pruning trees, irrigation, snow removal and general maintenance.

 
Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in forestry, agriculture or biology preferred.
  • Basic MS Excel.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strong people and organizational skills.
  • Previous experience as a lead hand or supervisor would be considered an asset.
  • Work in various weather conditions; heat, humidity, rain, etc.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding job functions.
  • Communication skills including clarifying directions, motivating the team to a common goal and sharing information.
  • A valid driver’s license
