Director, Category & Portfolio Strategist

Category Strategy is responsible for developing and deploying insight-led category growth solutions which create value for shoppers, retailers, and the Irving Consumer Products portfolio of brands and private brands. This role will integrate the category and brand performance objectives of retailers and the marketing team, then deeply understand the wants and needs of the consumer/shopper along the path to loyalty journey to translate into a ‘triple win’ category growth strategy and initiatives. This role is accountable for translating and packaging into an engaging Category Leadership Plan and 5P best practices for bricks and mortar and online. The role will collaborate with the CSD Director for each country to customize to the marketplace. This role will manage the business planning process templates and inputs required from the sales organization. This role will lead all category, market, and brand analysis required by the business, in addition to competitive intelligence and market tracking requirements.



Category Strategy


  • Serve as the expert in category and shopper orchestration to drive behavior which positively impacts the engagement funnel and category growth equation

  • Translate data and insights into strategies and initiatives which create value for shoppers, retailers, and the Cavendish portfolio

  • Develop and advise Marketing on principles to effectively manage brands and private brands in the category to minimize cannibalization

  • Develop and manage market-level Category Leadership Plan

  • Create category 5P Playbook best practices for bricks and mortar and online through collaboration with Market level CSD directors

  • Responsible for onboarding and training of CLPs and 5P best practices

  • Integrated Business Planning and Strategic Account Plans

  • Work with Marketing and Sales to understand the category, shopper, and marketplace inputs required for business planning

  • Responsible for the development and completion of business planning templates

  • Serve as the Category and Shopper expert in business planning meetings

  • Marketplace, Category, and Brand Analytics

  • Responsible for developing required marketplace, category, and brand analytics as requested by sales leadership

  • Proactively identify 5P marketplace opportunities and issues.

  • Develop and deliver monthly market performance reporting




  • University/College Degree required, MBA preferred

  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in the consumer packaged goods industry

  • 5+ years of Brand, Category Management, and/or sales strategy experience

  • Experienced in Nielsen, IRI, customer data platforms, and other syndicated services

  • High acumen to understand, interpret, and synthesize syndicated data and custom research

  • Strong storyboarding and presentation development skills. Ability to train others

  • Ability to lead, communicate and influence at all levels of the organization

  • Strong planning skills and project management

  • Highly organized, responsive, and a proactive collaborator
