Corporate Counsel

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building and repairing ships. Irving Shipbuilding’s primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with four other locations in Nova Scotia. Irving Shipbuilding is focused primarily on a number of significant long-term projects for the Government of Canada under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, including the ongoing construction of eight Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Canadian Coast Guard. In addition, Irving Shipbuilding has been chosen to build fifteen Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) vessels for the RCN, which will commence following the completion of an ongoing design phase.

We’re growing our team with career-defining opportunities that will revitalize Canada’s shipbuilding industry and provide Canada’s sailors with the ships they need to protect Canada’s interests at home and abroad. Our workforce of over 2,000 will grow to more than 2,800 at peak construction of the Canadian Surface Combatants.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and action-oriented lawyer for the role of Corporate Counsel. The successful candidate will be a member of our legal team and will report directly to the General Counsel. Our Corporate Counsel operate within a dynamic and fast-paced environment and provide a broad range of legal and commercial advice to the business. The legal department is located on-site at Halifax Shipyard. You will engage directly with the business on a myriad of legal issues that arise from the operation of a large complex business.

The Corporate Counsel role is a permanent, full-time position.

  • Provide timely, responsive and proactive legal advice to the company, including Irving Shipbuilding’s AOPS and CSC project teams, and to Irving Shipbuilding’s affiliated engineering company Fleetway Inc., on all aspects of their commercial relationships.
  • Analyzing and advising on complex commercial contracts for goods and services.
  • Drafting contracts and supporting business professionals in contract negotiations.
  • Advising on procurement processes and their successful execution in accordance with applicable law and other government requirements.
  • Providing legal and commercial advice on a wide range of topics
  • Advising on disputes that develop with third parties.

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree or Bachelors of Laws (LL.B).
  • A member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society or eligible to become one.
  • Minimum 3 years of legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
