Health and Safety Manager

Cavendish Farms is a leading producer of frozen potato products for retail and foodservice markets throughout Canada, the United States and around the world.  We have state-of-the-art processing plants in New Annan PEI, Lethbridge, AB, Wheatley, ON and another in Jamestown, ND, with head offices in Dieppe, NB and sales locations in Toronto, Montreal and Boston.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Safety Manager is responsible to manage WCB administration, creating and implementing safety programs, WHMIS, upholding the accredited AFPA PIR status, ensuring compliance with regional, provincial and federal OHS legislation, training and development.​

Successful Candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Possession of a degree or diploma in Health and Safety, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience in the Health and Safety sector.
  • Demonstrated track record of 4 to 6 years in Health and Safety roles, showcasing a comprehensive understanding of safety protocols, regulations, and best practices.
  • 1 to 2 years of Safety experience in the food manufacturing sector, indicating familiarity with industry-specific safety standards, procedures, and challenges.
  • Health and Safety background with experience conducting Root Cause Incident Investigations, Hazard Assessments, developing JSA’s, SOP’s and Safety Training Programs.
  • Knowledge with Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry and Lockout Tagout programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage team members and other stakeholders.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft products as well as online SDS management systems and incident reporting and tracking systems.
  • Be willing to work towards completion of a certificate program in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey ideas and information to various stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to efficiently manage tasks, projects, and resources to ensure smooth operations and optimal productivity within the organization.
  • Proficiency in handling and organizing data and information to facilitate decision-making processes and improve workflow efficiency.
  • Experience in design thinking and strategic planning to develop creative solutions and initiatives that align with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for conducting thorough research, analyzing data, and exploring innovative ideas to drive continuous improvement and foster a culture of learning within the organization.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide guidance and/or training to salaried and supervisory personnel, regarding Health and safety matters.
  • Design, coordinate, and oversee all training and development activities for employees, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and organizational standards.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for managers and supervisors, offering assistance and expertise on health and safety protocols, procedures, and best practices to promote a safe work environment.
  • Work closely with OHS team members to ensure consistency in application of approach in the areas of policy and program implementation.
  • Develop, implement and monitor the Plant’s Safety Program.
  • Conduct departmental inspections, hazard analysis, and audits, and develop subsequent action plans.
  • Compile statistical information related to safety performance.
  • Ensure timely reporting and follow-up on critical injuries and any and all Alberta OHS inspection orders.
  • Develop and implement training programs for employees including, but not limited to, WHMIS, Accident Investigation, Lockout Procedures, Confined Spaces.
  • Manage all disability management and submit documents and case management and/or adjudication for claims and appeals for WCB.
  • Coordinate all modified duty and/or return to work programs.
  • Uphold the accredited AFPA PIR status
