PHYSICAL HUMAN FACTORS SPECIALIST

 

Irving Shipbuilding, located at 3099 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 5M7 or 155 Chain Lake Drive Halifax NS B3S 1B3, is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels. The company's primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with three other locations in the Maritime Provinces. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Coast Guard. Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design evolution of systems related to the human to machine interface including operability, maintainability, and recoverability specifically in critical control spaces such as the Operations Room, Bridge, Machinery Control Room, and Communications Control Room.
  • Understand the Requirements Specifications and other Requirements documents to ensure user interfaces are designed properly for each Developmental and non-Developmental Based System. In addition, relative to the following plans, verify whether the derived system test procedures will be able to result in the needed test results: the Integrated Test, Evaluation and Acceptance Plan and the Integrated Test and Trials Plan.
  • The point of contact for Human Systems Integration Analysis related to systems design and conduct verification activities to ensure interfaces have been developed in accordance with the CSC User Style Guide.
  • Verify proper design considerations are taken into account relative to human machine interfaces and analyze the Human Engineering Design Approach Document-Operator and –Maintainer for inclusion of relevant design requirements.


Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years’ experience in the area of Human Factors specifically related to a Naval/Maritime Shipbuilding Project
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Experience in applying Human Factor Engineering to the design and evaluation of complex systems, providing technical recommendations to multidisciplinary teams is required
  • Experience writing technical papers, reports and presentations to support projection recommendations
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proven Microsoft office skills- Word, PowerPoint, and Excel required.

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
