PLANNER - MULTIDISCIPLINE / HULL & OUTFIT

 

Irving Shipbuilding, located at 3099 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 5M7, is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels. The company's primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with three other locations in the Maritime Provinces. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Coast Guard. Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is currently recruiting for 5 Planners. These are permanent full-time staff roles based in Halifax, NS.

 

Planner – Multidiscipline: Qualifications:

  • Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Years of Experience Required:
    • 2-5 years of experience in a planning and or production environment
    • 2-5 years of experience in a Shipbuilding industry
  • Thorough knowledge of Shipbuilding basics, stage of construction, new build, routing, etc.
  • High levels of familiarization with ship construction terminology
  • Ability to read drawings specific to new build ship construction
  • Experience using Cloudis, Aveva, S3D, MS excel and Autocad would be considered an asset
  • Candidates who identify capability and experience of working with one or more of the following disciplines will be considered an asset: Electrical, Pipe, HVAC, Structural, Joiner, Mechanical, Outfit Steel

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

 

Planner – Hull & Outfit: Qualifications:

  • Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Years of Experience Required: 2-5 years of relevant shipbuilding experience in planning and/or specific trade supervision
  • Experience using Primavera P6 (or similar project management software) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated understanding of CPM scheduling and EVM controls methodologies
  • Demonstrated understanding of shipbuilding production workflow for all trades
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills

Planner - Multidiscipline: Key Responsibilities:

  • In Planning Tool, build hierarchal network of work by stage of construction, based on the assembly planning in the 3D model, the production bill of materials, and unit integration documents
  • Build job pack schedule in accordance with the integrated master schedule and work package schedule in Aveva
  • Assign resources, to the skill level, based on allocated budgets, and norms
  • Assign materials to the jobs, based on the hierarchal assembly planning, resulting attributes, and assembly content
  • Produce job specific delivery request list(s) [pick lists]
  • Attend / conduct look-ahead meetings prior to job start with all players, to review, discuss, amend and approve job packs
  • Provide assistance to the production team, with a physical presence in all areas of the new build facilities, and ‘on the floor’, as the ship moves through all the stages of construction
  • Ensure that they have all of the information, and materials to complete their work productively on an ongoing basis
  • Liaise with other disciplines planners frequently to ensure productive and timely job packs as necessary
  • Interface with the warehousing team to proactively resolve any impending material kit issues
  • Work closely with production control to feedback any updates/changes to the job to ensure accurate and timely monitoring and control
  • Attend close out meetings to confirm each job is fully completed and obtain continuous improvement feedback for implementation
  • Produce close out documentation and archive for future audit purposes

Planner – Hull & Outfit: Key Responsibilities:

  • Read relevant contract documentation and understand work scope, schedule and budget requirements
  • Provide trade discipline specific leadership to the project planning/scheduling team in development of production strategy and WBS for contracted work scope in hull structural and outfit disciplines
  • Ensure all hull structural and outfit work scope, sequence logic, and production trade labour budget is accurately represented in production schedule and sub-schedules
  • Ensure hull structural and outfit milestones are properly represented in production schedule and sub-schedules
  • Ensure integration and coordination of hull structural and outfit activities with overall production schedule and sub-schedules
  • Ensure hull structural and outfit materials are supporting schedule and advise Lead Planner, Project Manager and Supply Chain Lead of required actions
  • Produce hull structural and outfit work packages to agreed schedule
  • Maintain and update production schedule to properly reflect progress, contract work scope changes and impacting issues
  • Demonstrate diligence, professionalism and appropriate level of responsibility for project.
  • Support the project team
