J.D. Irving Woodlands Division is currently seeking a forest science/biology professional to fill the role of Tree Improvement Specialist. The successful candidate will be capable of planning and supervising tree breeding, field testing activities and data management as a key member of J.D. Irving, Limited’s long-standing tree improvement program.

For more than 60 years, JDI has continued to be industry leaders in growing trees. Our tree improvement program has seen continuous advancements since its beginnings in 1980. Recent investments in a world class lab facility as well as genomics technologies are allowing us to accelerate and deploy our tree improvement program at an unprecedented pace.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead annual tree breeding and tree improvement test establishment across JDI forest regions.
  • Establish and organize field test measurement which includes training and follow-up to ensure high quality data acquisition.
  • Maintain extensive tree improvement databases including preparation of field data for analysis.
  • Participate in genetic analysis and interpretation in collaboration with the JDI Leader in Genetics and Forest Productivity and external research partners.
  • Work closely with JDI Nursery and Seed Orchard management to execute tree breeding, seed extraction, test seedling nursery production and tree grafting.
  • Develop excellent working relationships with external collaborative tree improvement initiatives in the region.

  • Undergraduate or graduate level education in a forestry/biology or related area. 
  • Experience in forestry/silviculture field work will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
