Dredge Deckhand – Marine Laborer

 

Harbour Development is a large Eastern Canadian Marine Construction and Dredging company with over 60 years of operations. Harbour Development specializes with delivering professional services in all aspects of marine dredging, and marine construction services to various private and public marine stakeholders throughout Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario and Western Canada. We operate a fleet of spud barge dredges, shallow draft workboats, tugboats, cranes, and dump scows.

 

We are currently seeking applicants for the Deckhand position in our dredges, to work primary in the Saint John Harbour. However, some travel within atlantic provinces might be required.

 

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Secure mooring lines to the dredge and dump scows.
  • Perform general maintenance and inspections on mechanical equipment.
  • Splice and repair cables and towing ropes.
  •  Sweep and washdown decks and do snow removal in winter.
  • Chip and paint decks and other painted surfaces as directed by superintendent.
  • Assist the spud and crane operator when required.
  • Contribute to Harbour Development’s Safety culture by:
    • Understand and comply with various safety processes within the Safety Management System.
    • Possess the skills to perform job related tasks and apply safe practices while performing physical tasks.
    • Have a thorough understanding of precautions and procedures related to the Safety Management System,
    • Have thorough understanding of pollution regulations and the company’s objectives regarding environmental protection.

 

 

Certification and Training Requirements:

 

  • Able to complete the following trainings within six months after start date:
    • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) or Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS)
    • Transport Canada Marine Medical
    • Marine First Aid and CPR
    • Other safety related training (confined space entry, fall arrest, WHMIS, Etc.)
  • Must be physically able to lift 50 lbs unassisted, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Past experience maintaining or repairing engines or hydraulic systems, or operating excavation equipment is considered a strong asset.
